Mikumi National Park – Safari
Mikumi National Park is Tanzania’s 4th Largest National Park
Many of our visitors want to visit a game park while in Africa. Just a four or five hour drive from Dar es Salaam is the Mikumi National Park. You can book an overnight visit at Mikumi. A typical trip with John Francis, the taxi driver we use in Dar, leaves very early out of Dar and arriving at Mikumi for lunch. An afternoon game trip follows. Dinner is followed by a night in a luxury tent that our visitors love. The next morning is breakfast and then a morning game drive. Back to camp for lunch and then the afternoon drive back to Dar es Salaam. Current price, as I write this, for ground transportation both ways provided by John Francis, is USD $400 for the whole trip. Another possibility is to charter a light plane in Dar to provide transportation. Costs for park entrance fees, accommodations, and game drives varies but the options can be researched and booked online. Overall, it is one of the least expensive ways to do an African safari.
Visitors can plan on their Mikumi visit on arrival into Tanzania, or just before departing the county back to the USA.
I love Mikumi because almost all African animals are found there. This includes elephants, lions, zebra, giraffes, hippos, wart hogs, and antelope. Really the only animal not there is the rhinoceros. The game park is fairly small and is a natural place where the animals live. They are not fenced into the location. Because of its smaller size, it can effectively be done in two game drives. This compares favorably to large, vast game parks like the Serengeti.
